In Oaxaca, on Friday afternoon, agents from the State Investigation Agency (AEI) belonging to the Attorney General's Office of the State of Oaxaca (FGEO) arbitrarily detained journalist Álvaro Cuitláhuac López and his family. According to the images shared, the agents arrived at Prolongación de Galeana street, near the Central de Abasto in the city of Oaxaca de Juárez, and proceeded to arrest the journalist along with his relatives.
After several hours of detention, the judicial authority confirmed that they were released after verifying that they were not involved in the events. Additionally, it committed to investigating the conduct of the agents who participated in the operation.
In response to this incident, on social media, journalists, activists, and human rights defenders condemned the violence exerted against Álvaro Cuitláhuac López and his family. Miguel Ángel Vásquez de la Rosa from Educa A.C. criticized the statement from the Attorney General's Office of Oaxaca, stating that the actions of the agents could constitute crimes against humanity, such as possible acts of torture.
Solidarity and rejection of these violent actions were immediate. It is essential that the situation is clarified and that respect for human rights is guaranteed in such interventions. Freedom of the press and respect for journalistic work are fundamental pillars of a democratic society.
